Hippos are semi-aquatic and spending most of the day submerged, hippos are found in small herds with a territorial dominant bull. Hippos secrete a red lubricating oil, which gives rise to their reddish skin colour when out of the water and offers some protection to the sun. Nonetheless, their skins are sensitive and hippos feed only during the night, wandering up to 20km to find grazing grounds. When startled during the night, hippos can be extremely dangerous, and they may be responsible for more human deaths in Africa than any other wild animal! They can remain submerged in water for up to 6 minutes.
Sometimes you can see Hippo right in front of the Hunting camp, this is not always guaranteed as they do move around to all the waterholes on the Reserve.
